Melchizedek was the King of Salem Abraham met in Genesis Chapter 14. He is portrayed as both a priest and a king. When Paul confirms that Jesus is the perfect priest, he makes it clear that Jesus is not like earthly priests who are appointed by men with a single role of offering blood sacrifices at the temple for sins over and over. Rather like Melchizedek, as priest and king he has the power to forgive all sin once and for all.
Jesus’ ability to forgive the world’s sins with his single sacrifice makes him the priest in the order of Melchizedek.
